The guidelines for effective organizational communication include adjusting to various people, situations, and individual needs; expecting that the members of the organization may move in and out of teams; and managing personal relationships (Wood, 2011).

Adjust to Various Situations, People, and Needs

Organizations are composed of people with different identities and needs. Employers must know how to accommodate these differences and needs. For instance, individuals with diverse cultural or religious backgrounds expect their employers to understand and respect their religious celebrations or holidays. Single parents or pregnant employees may require family leave or “flexitime” (flexible working hours) to attend to their families. Organizations that implement flexible rules and policies are considered effective workplaces (Wood, 2011).

Expect to Move In and Out of Teams

Members of an organization may change. Each member of the group must, therefore, be able to adjust their communication style depending on the group to which they belong, enabling them to move easily in and out of teams.

Manage Personal Relationships

Personal and professional relationships may overlap. It is crucial to maintain good personal relationships with other members of the organization. Romantic partners must interact according to the situation and the expectations of other members. Unfair treatment and privileges may cause envy or resentment among colleagues, destroy relationships, and affect work productivity.
